So last night my computer just finally crapped out on me. As most of you know, it's been on the fritz for months, but I've always been able to get it back up with some sort of magical higgledy-piggledy basically consisting of letting it reboot upside down while crossing my eyes and hopping on one foot. But last night it wouldn't cooperate at all. When it tried to reboot (which it did only while being held vertically) it said it couldnt find Windows. So I went to bed early - before midnight for the first time in forever, though I still slept till noon.

This morning I couldnt get it to turn on at all. I took it to Best Buy and yelled at the guy. I was actually proud of myself - usually I'm all permissive and "okay, thats fine, just do what you can" but I was agitated. We got the most expensive warranty on this computer which we bought when this EXACT FUCKING THING happened last year and I exchanged it for new one. But no, this time he cant do that. He can only exchange if it's not fixable, which this is. However, they'll have to send it away to fix it, and even though my warranty GUARANTEES a maximum of 7day turnaround time, he said it probably wouldnt be that soon and they'd refund my warranty. Fuck that - "here, buy our $400 warranty but if you ever try to use it, we'll just give your money back."

Argh. I know some of you have worked at Best Buy (there's at least 3 of you) and you're just going to explain why that's all they can do, blah, blah, but spare me. I know. I understand the logistics of it all, but from a customer's point of view, it's extremely irritating and frustrating. The guy finally said "it's probably just the hard drive failing, so if you have the recovery cd, we can just install a new one in the store." But the Vaio doesn't come with a recovery cd. It comes with a piece of paper saying "Your new Vaio does not require system or application revocery cd's." So now I have to call Sony and order a recovery kit, take it back to best buy and they'll give me a new hard drive. Okay, at least that'll take less than a week, assuming Sony can ship it to me in a couple days (I'll put a rush on it if I have to). Sure, I could just find a Windows installation cd, but if I get the recovery kit, it comes with all the extra software that originally came on my computer, and that's worth waiting a couple days. Meanwhile, my computer still cant find Windows. That's the cue for me to pull out my handy-dandy ubuntu cd and make do while I have to.

On a related note, can any of you computer geeks tell me the difference between a recovery cd called VGN-S260/S270 RECOVERY DVD SET and one called VGN-S260P,S270P/B RECOVERY DVD SET and which one is the one I need? VGN-S260 is the model number, but what the fuck is P/B?

Luckily, since this happened the first time in April, I've been putting any files I care about on my external drive because I knew it was just a matter of time. So at least I dont have to worry about Best Buy recovering my data.

What pisses me off the most is that my warranty is only for 3yrs. This has happened once a year since I bought it, so what the fuck am I going to do when this happens again and the warranty's expired? I'm convinced this is just an extremely poorly made product. Everyone, don't buy a Sony Vaio S-series.

In other news, apart from that, life is good. I just realized I live on the same block as the Full House house. You have no idea how thrilling that is. Shuddup. I grew up with that show. I'd watch the opening credits, with them driving across the Golden Gate Bridge and living in that house with the cityscape behind it and just be in awe of it all.. "do people actually live in places like that?" Well, maybe not quite like that, but gimme a break, I was 5. But now I live here!! That park they have the picnic in is a block from my house!

And my building is in the center of the block, and my bedroom is at the very back, so I hear no traffic. And I love my room. And the kitty. I'm within walking distance of almost everything, and the bus to everywhere else is half a block away or across the street.

And I love The Used. And Tool. Dont you love it when you rediscover a cd you've had for years and just hadnt picked up in a while?

Even my pissed posts end happily. I love being an optimist.

I'm about to see a million things
I thought I'd never see before and I
I'm about to do all of the things
I've dreamed of
