Peter Jackson re: movie piracy. WTF?

Recently, Revision3 & Digg held a Digg Dialogg with Peter Jackson. It was pretty cool, but his answer to one question kind of shocked me.

“How do you feel about movie piracy?”

“Movie piracy is a very dangerous situation. It's literally - it could lead to the death of films. It's that serious, because you have to realize that [...] they have to make sense financially. You have a studio or a company that makes the film, it costs a certain amount of money, and they're only going to continue make those movies if they can earn their money back. And piracy, literally, threatens the ability of those studios to earn their money back. and if we get to a point where the studio makes a movie, and the pirates take most of the money, instead of it going back to the studio, there's only going to be one result. And that result is there will be no more films made. Because it wont make sense anymore, financially. And the pirates will have destroyed everything that we love, which is movies and film entertainment, and it'll be gone. So to me, it is a profoundly disturbing and worrying crime. Because apart from the criminal aspects of stealing money from other people, which I can understand that people think, ‘well, the studio has lots of money, what damage does a little pirate guy do for $10?’ It's actually the real problem that's threatening the entire industry and there may be no more films made as a result." (emphasis mine)

Watch the video here

Um, wow.

This coming from the guy whose first movie was shot as a side project while he was working full time, with the cast consisting of his friends who worked for free.

You can’t kill film. You can’t kill storytelling. It’s human nature to tell stories, and I don’t know if you’ve noticed - but everyone has a camera these days. With the amazing affordability of some pretty decent equipment, and, ironically, the internet, anyone can easily make a film and get it out there.

The most extreme result of piracy would be that maybe Hollywood will have to start living less extravagantly. Actors can have 2 Ferraris instead of 5. Salaries can be 5 digits instead of 7. Because if they won’t, there are plenty of independent filmmakers doing it already. And, maybe quality will be the deciding factor for which movies are successful, instead of wealth. People will start making movies because their hearts are in it, instead of just as a get-rich-quick scheme.

It reminds me of this post by DemonBaby regarding the music industry - this is a must read for anyone on the internet. And the same applies to the movie industry. They need to figure out digital distribution quick - before the pirates hand control over to the indies.

I just realized I never wrote a concluding post for my trip. Last you heard, I was in Socorro...

The next day I rode to Albuquerque, which was only ~80 miles. I hung out with friends I hadn't seen in years, including roessnakhan, at various locations throughout the day. I did have a stupid moment where I left my tail light on while parked and we had to use jumper cables. Oops.

I left Albuquerque fairly early, going up towards Santa Fe. I had breakfast at a Denny's in Bernalillo, where a waitress called me "brave". As I rode through Espanola, Tres Piedras, and crossed the Colorado border, No Doubt's Just a Girl came up on my playlist, and I laughed, reflecting on whether or not the waitress would've thought me "brave" if I was male...

Throughout the trip, I'd been admiring the constant gradual transitioning of climates/weather/wildlife/plantlife/people. I also realized how much I love the Southwestern landscape. Desert, but not in the flat and boring way - So much wildlife, and scenery that's so unique to the area. And mountains! Once I got into Colorado, it was much flatter, and more... farm. Which means - straight roads. Yes, there were mountains in the distance, but immediate scenery was a bit drab. It also started getting cloudy, and I could only watch as I headed into dark clouds. Luckily, I only got barely sprinkled on near Fairplay.

I spent the next day and a half with friends and family I hadn't seen in years, including jaberwockynmt, who just happened to be in the area, even though he lives in Seattle.

That stretch out of Denver to Grand Junction was the coldest leg of my trip, though that's not saying much. It was actually probably t-shirt weather if you're hanging out in the sun, but the windchill while riding made it a bit nippy. Though I must say, the drivers on that part of 70 really impressed me with their ability to get back over to the right lane once they've passed someone. It was much appreciated through those mountainous curves.

Then Utah came, which meant the gorgeous red cliffs that it's known for. Loved it. I stopped in at Mom's Cafe for dinner, before finally breaking off of the freeway and getting to know highway 50 as the sun set.

Leaving Delta, I passed a bunch of, what turned out to be scintillator detectors measuring cosmic rays, which would have puzzled me if @patricknorton hadn't mentioned it to me ahead of time.

I love that stretch of highway 50. As I said, I love the Southwestern desert, and there are no real cities to pollute that out there, and even towns are few and far between. The only thing on an otherwise uninhabited 150mi stretch of road is a motel, gas station, cafe and casino all-in-one, at Border, Utah, and it's not even on the map. What you see in that wikipedia image is literally the entire "community".

It took a toll on my tires, though, because just outside of Sacramento, I got a flat in the rear tire. I probably should've stopped an extra night in Carson City, or even Grand Junction, and found another tire, but it was Sunday, and looked like it could at least make it home. It didn't. Luckily, @patricknorton was able to tow my bike and I back into SF.

I've posted my photos on Flickr here, including 4 panoramas, but I'm still working on molding the video into something postable. Plus, Hak5 featured @atlasrider on their latest episode, and gave me some ideas on a few things. Motovlogging... who knew it had a name? Though, does it count if you don't narrate? Because I haven't figured out how I'd incorporate a microphone into the setup I have (and not really sure I care to at this point).

Today was lots of fun. I got to play on some twisties without all my luggage, which was refreshing. Huge thanks to normalcyispasse and tleex for taking me out canyon carving. We went east out of Mesa to Tortilla Flat. I'm kicking myself for not having my helmet cam out there but we got some stills (don't forget to send/post those normalcyispasse!) Plus we stopped for ice cream and I got prickly pear, which was delicious. My bike overheated when we were almost home but I think that was more due to trying to keep up with Brandon's R1 in 100 degrees than any issues with my bike. It was fine on the road to Tucson, though the sun had set by then. It was kind of scary heading towards a lightning storm but it didn't start raining until I got off the freeway and was almost to my cousin's house.

The heat hasn't really bothered me too much. I'm staying hydrated and my mesh gear has good ventilation, so as long as I'm moving, I'm good (and I miss lane splitting). And even though it was relatively cool for Phoenix at 100, I think that should be the hottest bit of this trip, so the hard part's over. Nevada might get close though.

I'd forgotten how pretty the clouds can be out here! I love seeing a sky full of puffy clouds, plus the sunset was breathtaking tonight.

Tomorrow: Socorro!

I forgot to post this at the beginning of my trip, but I was having mechanical issues until the last minute and wasn't even sure I'd be able to go.

But it all worked out and I'm here now in Mesa, AZ with family at the end of Day 2.

I got a late start on Friday so I changed my route to LA from Hwy1 to I-5. Less scenic, more monotonous, quite a bit hotter, but it went smoothly and I had fun playing traffic leapfrog with the other cars amidst all the semis.

Today was more fun, mostly because I went through Joshua Tree. It was my only non-interstate segment of the day, and my first one of the trip, and it was gorgeous. Outside of Joshua Tree, back on I-10, it was overcast pretty much the entire way into Phoenix. The clouds looked stormy, but I only got a few sprinkles, so that just meant it was cloudy and cool and smelled like rain. I couldn't have asked for better desert weather.

For more snippets as I go, follow my twitter: http://www.twitter.com/serafinak

And I'm not leaving my GPS on the entire way, for my phone's battery's sake, but I'm trying to check in with Firepin at every stop, so you can follow me at: http://tr.im/xUCu

I posted this to motorcycles, but decided to get out of my echo chamber and spread the word to non-riders too:

I rarely rarely comment on random news sites, but I came across this one and made an exception:

Lane-Splitting To Blame For Spike In Motorcycle Deaths?
California Is The Only State Where Lane-Splitting Is Legal

Now, I’ve heard this argument before and I was doing my usual eye-rolling as I read the arguments - predictably, all drivers saying some variation on “they shouldn’t do that”.

But once they got to the supposed meat of the article, that lane splitting is the cause of a spike in motorcycle deaths, all they said was “The number of fatal accidents in California is slightly below the national average.”

Um.

Aside from the fact that lane sharing has been standard practice here for a long time, and therefore unrelated to any “spike”, doesn’t that mean lanesplitting ISN’T a cause here at all? If anything, maybe it helps?

Narggggghh. Damn media sensationalism. That’s when I decided to comment, especially after noticing there were only 6 other comments, all actually pretty reasonable, too.

This also helps prove my theory that any headline in the form of a question is complete bullshit and can be answered with “Um, no.” Because if the answer was yes, it wouldn’t be a question.

And, my comment at the site:

“As others have said, the safest place a bike can travel is between the lanes of cars. On my bike in regular traffic (not lane sharing), I have nearly been merged into COUNTLESS times. I have NEVER been merged into while lane sharing because cars are MUCH more likely to see a car beside them than a bike. Of course the danger is when the bike comes across a gap in traffic that a car tries to take advantage of as the bike approaches. But the smart biker learns these tricks.

There are safe ways to lane share and there are dangerous ways, as with anything.

And you'll notice the arguments against it are variations on "they shouldn't do that". Um, why? Because you're jealous you have to sit in traffic and we don't? Get over it. But really, I've seen more drivers move OUT of my way than anything. Which, to those of you who do so, I greatly appreciate it!”

I’ve been toying with the idea that lane sharing makes bikes more visible to cars in a general sense - drivers are more aware that motorcycles exist when they’re filtering right past them. I have no proof of this, but I will say I’m EXTRA cautious around cars during tourist season, especially cars with out-of-state plates.

And to those who say “but they scare the shit out of me when they go past!” - that’s because you’re not expecting it. Learn to expect it. Watch your mirrors (which you should be doing anyway), move out of the way when you can, and you won’t be so surprised next time.

I’m planning a 3,000mi/10 day motorcycle trip through CA/AZ/NM/CO/UT/NV September 4-13.

My route will be either this (#1) or this (#2). #1 will be cooler and quicker, but #2 is more scenic. Plus, I’ve been told I’ll be able to find gas every 100 miles along #1 (with a little advance planning), and I don’t know if that’s the case with #2. Green markers are overnight stops. C through H is pretty much set, as that’s where I have friends and family, but through UT, NV and CA, let me know if you have any suggestions for alternate routes.

My schedule:

Friday, 9/4:
San Francisco, CA to Los Angeles, CA - 9hrs
hotel

Saturday, 9/5:
Los Angeles, CA to Phoenix, AZ - 7hrs
See family

Sunday, 9/6:
Phoenix, AZ to Tucson, AZ - 2hrs
See family

Monday, 9/7:
Tucson, AZ to Socorro, NM - 8hrs
See friends

Tuesday, 9/8:
Socorro, NM to Albuquerque, NM - 1hr
See friends

Wednesday, 9/9:
Albuquerque, NM to Denver, CO - 8hrs
See friends

Thursday, 9/10:
Denver, CO to Broomfield, CO - 30min
See family

Friday, 9/11:
Denver, CO to Utah - 8-9.5hrs
Hotel

Saturday, 9/12:
Utah to Nevada - 8-9.5hrs
Hotel

Sunday, 9/13:
Nevada to San Franciso, CA - 5-7hrs
HOME

I won’t bring my laptop with me, but I’ll be posting pictures and stories from my phone to here, as well as to twitter, so keep an eye out. ;)

I made my first eBay purchase last week and it finally arrived.
I took my motorcycle to the racetrack on Easter Sunday. The weather was perfect.

Met and hung out with a bunch of cool people. 'Twas much fun passing bikes with 2-3x the hp on some of the turns. ;)

Instructors were super helpful, and the classroom sessions were quite informative. Rode 2-up with an ex-racer, which was probably the most terrifying experience of my life, and also one of the most fun.

I learned a few things about my general riding style that I'd kinda been aware of before, but were incredibly noticable on the track. Also, I really really need a garage instead of street parking. I need space to do things to my bike.... dirty, dirty things.

And HUGE thanks to epim and Stan from BARF who helped me prep my bike and get it up there and back. :)

Fuck rollercoasters. :D

Click for more pics

Anyone who doesn't "get" Twitter seems to focus on the egotism and boringness of the possible answers to the question "what are you doing?", which is how Twitter frames itself. And they're right. But the most interesting tweets on my stream dont answer that question. More often, they answer "what's on your mind right now?". Twitter is valuable for its ability to spread information to lots of people immediately. Any information. Memes, links, videos, news, spontaneous gatherings online and off, etc.

Regarding the issue of politicians twittering during Obama's speech, lots of journalists are framing it as if that makes them as bad as gossipy schoolkids. Twittering politicians is not a bad thing. The spontaneous, and succinct nature of tweets reveals a side of a person you do not get any other way. You get a certain honesty, or at least a feel for their personality on a day-to-day level (there are exceptions). You get the Republican who recommended people watch a basketball game if they didn't want to "watch Pelosi smirk for the next hour", and you get Claire McCaskill reporting on the new Health and Human Services secretary, saying she'll "be terrific", minutes after it's announced. These are their unfiltered opinions of an event as it happens. No filter, no delay. How is that a bad thing?

Twitter's not just useful politically. As I said, it spreads any information. Patrick Norton tweets one of my flickr photos and I get 7200 views in one day. Kevin Rose (and others) regularly brings down websites by sending thousands of followers to a page all at once. Veronica has an interview in twenty minutes, so she asks for interview question ideas and has plenty of material in no time.

The list goes on. It's ironic that twitter's usefulness can't be properly summed up in 140 characters. At least, I havent seen it. And twitter's not helping itself any, but that's another blog entry.

Sen. Claire McCaskill tweeted it best: "Those naysayers bout twitter don't get it. It's all about communication. Communication is always a good thing especially in my job."

People had written on the sidewalks with chalk in support of the protests today, and I tried to get a still photo of this one, but the bright sun combined with the flagpole's shadow made it impossible. Then I realized a short video would look even better. Artistically, I think this is the shot I'm proudest of from the set today:

<lj-embed id="57" />

I read this and cant help thinking of the coincidence that it's exactly 40 years later and here we are again. This is a huge national movement, one I'll be telling my kids/grandkids about, and to be in (arguably) the center of it - San Francisco - is incredible.
