Here's a site for determining where one sits, politically, in a more defined sense than the traditional left-right continuum. Basically it simply adds a social scale (up&down), to create a two dimensional map on which to better plot points. This let's you illustrate, for instance, the differences between the kind of authoritarian governments run by a Hitler and a Stalin. It's not a radical concept, but it's one which generally gets ignored when people go talking about "left and right," particularly in the USA.
